When I first started out as a fledgling "amateur gourmet cook" (oxymoronic?), I understood that the 'universal' knife for the kitchen was the 8" chef's, and I agree...if you only have one knife...and it was my first serious purchase of a quality knife (a Global, if memory serves me). Over the decades, I have accumulated numerous other specialty knives, but somehow had never pursued a smaller version of the universal 8" chef's. Well, allow me to opine, first, I have for some unknown reason not experienced the Wusthof brand before(!), and I am singularly impressed. It is a tool of superior quality; and the 6" blade has been a near perfect addition to my collection...don't know how I got along w/o it for so long. I even purchased two more to give to family members that are taking the art of cooking seriously. I also must add my standard comment that Amazon is a fine organization that I have learned to trust more with each purchase (and no, I'm not a shill for their PR department :-).

this is a great knife but it is heavy compared to my victorinox 10" knife almost 3 ounces heavier and it does cause wrist fatigue after several hours of daily use. the knife is very comfortable in my hand with a great edge i only have to sharpen it every 3 days but for heavy prep work I would buy a lighter knife
